I'm still learning how to use it, but from what I can tell it is an incredibly powerful development tool. The drag and drop style of programming is great for kids.

I felt in love with Etoys the first time I used it, it was so different to current software developed for kids. Alan Kay's vision touched my heart. Since then I've been shared my enthusiasm with teachers, parents and, of course, with children, too.

Using Smalltalk/Squeak was to me like removing a curtain which had veiled the essence of object-oriented programming.

Because it is a good way for learning object oriented software design (not only with kids) - and because the SmallTalk community has many smart and friendly people.

Having Etoys in the standard Sugar software distribution for the One Laptop Per Child XO and other computers means that we can for the first time integrate software into a curriculum. Previously, students had infrequent and irregular access to computers in school, and no uniformity in hardware or software. Now children get to take their Etoys home and do collaborative homework in it.
See http://www.earthtreasury.org//wiki.cgi?ReplacingTextbooks
Plus it's way cool software, and I have been wanting to do this since I first saw Smalltalk in 1981 and heard about the Dynabook.

I enjoy programming in various languages like C++, Perl, Java, and Haskell. However, Etoys is different, because it brings to programming the fun of exploration.
